Dance at Oberlin College

The Theatre and Dance Program at Oberlin College invites applications for a one-semester, non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for the second semester of the 2008-09 academic year, at the faculty rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. The Oberlin Dance Program encourages students to create, perform, and think about movement in a manner that is consonant with their experience in the other fine and liberal arts. The curriculum offers various approaches to the study of movement: critical inquiry, somatic studies, creation and performance with an emphasis on collaboration, and physical techniques. The Dance Program encourages and supports students' curiosity and willingness to take risks and explore new ideas. We are seeking candidates with demonstrated scholarship in some aspect of dance who can teach strong research and writing courses and who are interested in having a strong academic presence in our program. The visiting assistant professor will teach three dance courses including but not limited to subjects such as dance history, theory, or other courses which encourage critical inquiry and research in dance and areas related to the dance field (to be proposed by the applicant as part of the application materials). Proposed courses may cover areas such as world dance (both in research and in practice), cross-cultural dance, dance and literature or film (video), somatic studies, and/or specific dance practices that are outside the western dance cannon. Applicants who can teach Contact Improvisation or other studio courses are encouraged to propose one such course as part of their three course load. Among the qualifications expected for appointment is the PhD degree in hand or expected by Spring semester, 2009. Visiting Instructor of Graduate Teacher Education at Oberlin College

The Graduate Teacher Education Program at Oberlin College invites applications for a part-time, non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for fall semester 2008 and will carry the rank of Visiting Instructor. The instructor will teach one course in the general area of developmental psychology. Working title and course description follows: Development & Psychology of Learners: Early and Middle Childhood Years (3 credits). This course will be taught fall semester, 2008. Using primary source material in early and middle childhood and developmental literature, the course will help candidates examine the influence of family, peers, school, and the media on the social and psychological development of children. Candidates will learn observational techniques as well as techniques for interpreting and reporting data. Case study work will be central to the course and information shared in discussions of the case studies will help candidates understand the ways that theory is integrated with data gathering and a beginning understanding of the general developmental stages of young and older children and the uses and limits of employing a developmental perspective/lens as a teacher. Among the qualifications required for appointment is the masters’ degree or beyond. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in graduate teaching. Director of The Center for the Study of American Democracy at Kenyon College

Kenyon College announces an opening for a Director of its exciting new Center for the Study of American Democracy. Established with the generous assistance of an NEH Challenge Grant through its We the People Initiative, the aim of the Center is to utilize American political and cultural history to promote the study and appreciation of America's founding principles locally, regionally, and nationally. The Director will occupy a newly endowed professorship in the Department of Political Science. The Director will regularly report to the Provost and an Advisory Board of the Center made up of members from the College and prominent figures beyond the College. The position will begin on July 1, 2008. The Director is expected to be in residence at Kenyon for at least half of each academic year. Responsibilities of the Director include convening a biennial conference at the Center and establishing other public programming for the Center; teaching at least one course during each conference year and two courses in every other year; supervising the (paper or electronic) publication and dissemination of books and other materials arising out of conferences; engaging in annual fundraising for the Center in conjunction with Kenyon's Development Office; publicizing the Center's activities in conjunction with the Public Affairs Office; supervising content for the Center's website and producing a weblog; and continuing to develop new events and activities to occur under the auspices of the Center.
