Anti-Racist & Decolonial Approaches to Digital Pedagogies Virtual Event

Posted on August 4, 2021

The Five Colleges of Ohio Library and Academic Committees invite you to participate in Anti-Racist and Decolonial Approaches to Digital Pedagogies on Thursday, August 12, 2021 from 10am – Noon with digital humanist & historian Jessica Marie Johnson (Johns Hopkins University and Hutchinson Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University) on bringing a critical lens to using digital resources in the classroom.

Incorporating digital resources has become the norm for most classes in the liberal arts and sciences, especially with the acceleration of remote learning, hybrid options, and increasingly dispersed students (and faculty) during the COVID pandemic. Yet bringing a critical lens to how we use digital scholarship, institutional repositories (IR), online archives and exhibits, and other resources is too often neglected in the push to adopt the newest technologies, platforms, databases, and open-access (OA) publishing possibilities.

Many of our faculty have begun to adopt (and contribute scholarship to) OA journals and Open Educational Resources (OER).  Faculty increasingly draw on digital collections—of literary works, historical archives, scientific databases, social media, and other aspects of digital culture—in our courses.  What opportunities do these digital treasure troves offer for our pedagogical approaches?  How can we approach them in critically engaged ways?  And how can we utilize digital resources to promote collaborative, inclusive, and equitable engagement among our students, as well as with local communities and populations outside the academy.

Dr. Johnson will host a timely discussion of strategies for asking students to critically engage with digital resources, such as archives and social media. Ohio Five Librarians will share links to local Library Guides and other resources.

This workshop is limited to 50 participants from the Ohio Five colleges. Participants who attend the full session will receive a $50 stipend made possible by a grant from the Five Colleges of Ohio Collaborative Grants Program.

To register, please
complete this registration form by Tuesday, August 10, 2021. Participants will receive a Zoom link and further instructions about the workshop with their confirmation.
