Call for Applications: Funding Available for Digital Scholarship and Pedagogy Conferences - December 12 Deadline

Posted on October 7, 2021

The CODEX initiative offers up to $2,000 to faculty and staff members to attend digital scholarship, digital pedagogy or open education conferences, with a December 12 deadline.

As a part of its CODEX initiative (the Collaborative for Digital Engagement and Experience), the Ohio Five is able to offer funding for faculty and staff to attend external conferences or institutes related to digital scholarship, digital pedagogy, or open education. This opportunity is one facet of our consortial exploration of digital engagement and experience, and it is of a piece with regular professional development workshops, and an annual summer institute designed for teams of faculty, staff, and students to collaborate on the design of new courses and co-curricular projects that aim to cultivate critical engagement with digital technologies.

At this time, we are pleased to once again invite applications for awards of up to $2,000 in reimbursable expenses to selected faculty and staff from across all five colleges to attend conferences or institutes related to digital scholarship and pedagogy scheduled to take place prior to June 30, 2022.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some conferences have shifted to virtual formats and some have not yet made firm plans for 2022. If you have questions about the eligibility of a specific event for these awards, please contact the Program Manager for CODEX, Jacob Heil, at heilj@ohio5.org.

In the past, the Ohio Five has offered support for faculty and staff to attend the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. We will continue to offer this as an option, but as there are many other institutes and conferences offering valuable professional development opportunities, we would like to support attendance at those as well, provided they meet the general requirements of this award. Eligible expenses include registration fees, flights and ground transportation, meals, and lodging.

To be considered eligible, the conference or institute should offer one or more of the following:

  • skill-based courses or events that focus on developing proficiency with a new digital tool or method, such as text analysis, digital mapping, or digital storytelling
  • pedagogical courses or events that focus on methods of engaging students in meaningful, project-based work that positions technology as both a mode of knowledge creation as well as the subject of critical inquiry
  • theory-based or discussion-based conferences and institutes that seek to address topics related to work in digital scholarship and pedagogy, such as ethics and digital citizenship, equity and inclusion, accessibility, or open scholarship

Some examples of events faculty and staff have attended in the past include:

If you are interested in applying for funding to attend a conference or institute relevant to digital pedagogy and scholarship, please submit an application form by Sunday, December 12.

Funding is limited so we have developed a simple set of selection criteria on which to evaluate applications.

The criteria include:

  • Relevance of selected conference, institute, or course to digital pedagogy or digital scholarship
  • Relevance of selected conference, institute, or course to teaching goals
  • Availability of other sources of professional development funds

Those who receive awards will be asked to share their experiences with colleagues at the 2022 CODEX Summer Institute. For questions about these awards, or if you are interested in learning more about CODEX, please visit https://codex.ohio5.org or email us at codex@ohio5.org.
