Create a Sierra Account for a Staff Member

New accounts can be modeled after another employee with similar access authorization in order to eliminate numerous steps in assigning permissions.

  • Sign into the Sierra Administration Application at https://consort.library.denison.edu:63100/sierra/admin

  • Under User Accounts, select Authorizations and Authentication.

  • Click Create User at the top right

  • Under the Basic Info tab, complete the following:

    • Within the Name field, enter the employee’s initials, beginning with the initial of the associated school (e.g. John Q. Public at Wooster would be entered as “wjqp”).

    • Within the Full Name field, enter the 3-letter code for the school and the employee’s full name (e.g. “WOO John Public”).

    • In the Password and Confirm Password fields, enter a temporary password that the employee will use to sign in for the first time. Note: the password is limited to 8 characters.

    • Select the User Group and Accounting Unit that is appropriate for the employee and school (e.g. “WOO Staff” and “4 WOOST”).

    • The remaining fields in the Create New User section can be left in the default status.

    • Click SAVE at the bottom right.

  • Select Permissions from the horizontal toolbar (to the right of the Basic Info tab). This is where you can assign permissions for the user.

    • In order to model permissions after another user, select Import Settings at the top right.

    • Select a user or user type by entering a name in the filter field, or making a selection from the list below.

    • Once a similar user is selected, check the box(es) next to the section(s) to be imported (this will usually be everything).

    • Click Import Settings.

  • Click SAVE at the bottom right.

  • Send an email to the employee with their login information and instructions. This should include:

    • The username (e.g. wjqp)

    • The temporary password generated above.

    • Include instructions for installing the Sierra Desktop Application.

    • Be sure to encourage the employee to change the password upon their first login by clicking Admin > Change Password in the toolbar within Sierra.

  • Provide contact information in case there are questions.
